# Define Role and Success Profile

Status: draft · v0.1.0 · Hiring System
draft reference — not a fitted standard

Turn an approved workforce need into a clear, job-related definition of the outcomes, context, capabilities, and evidence required for success.

## Purpose
Give sourcing, assessment, compensation, selection, onboarding, and later performance management one coherent definition of the role.

## Steps
1. Confirm the workforce need — Anchor the role in a real business need before describing a person.
2. Define successful outcomes — Describe what the role must accomplish before listing credentials or traits.
3. Describe the operating context — Make the environment, constraints, interfaces, and enabling conditions visible.
4. Identify differentiating capabilities — Define the behaviors and capabilities that distinguish effective performance in this context.
5. Classify requirements — Prevent convenient proxies from becoming unjustified barriers.
6. Design the evidence plan — Define how the next processes can obtain comparable evidence for each important criterion.
7. Review, approve, and publish the profile — Create one controlled definition consumed by every downstream hiring process.

## Connections
- upstream: Approve Workforce Need and Headcount (/processes/approve-workforce-need) — trigger: Workforce need approved or provisionally authorized
- downstream: Establish Compensation Range and Employment Parameters (/processes/establish-compensation-range) — trigger: Draft profile ready for cross-functional review
- downstream: Open and Source the Role (/processes/open-and-source-role) — trigger: Role success profile approved
- downstream: Assess and Select Candidates (/processes/assess-and-select-candidates) — trigger: Selection design begins
- downstream: Onboard the New Hire (/processes/onboard-new-hire) — trigger: Offer accepted

## Measures
- Role-profile cycle time: Elapsed time from confirmed role-design mandate to profile approval.
- Criteria evidence coverage: Material criteria with an approved evidence method divided by all material criteria.
- Downstream revision rate: Opened roles requiring material profile revision after downstream work begins divided by all opened roles.
- Profile adoption: Required downstream artifacts linked to the approved profile version divided by all required artifacts.
- Early outcome alignment: Structured post-entry review of whether priority role outcomes remain valid and observable; not a causal claim about the process alone.
- Artificial barrier rate: Proposed required attributes removed or reclassified because no job-related rationale could be established.
